The Limbik Deep Dive Series: Welcome

Today’s disinformation landscape is sophisticated, diverse, and complex. Modern information threats—powered by emerging technologies—pose an elevated risk to governments, societies, multinational corporations, and non-profit organizations. To governments and societies, modern disinformation efforts threaten the integrity of democracy and the social fabric.

As emerging technologies — including AI and Extended Reality Media — facilitate the spread of false information by malicious actors, these same technologies can be leveraged to identify, prioritize, and counter disinformation. Limbik combines a proprietary AI/ML-powered software with expert qualitative analysis to identify emerging misinformation, disinformation, and mal-information (MDM) activities and predict the potential impact. Limbik’s work informs proactive MDM risk mitigation activities including the development of materials, communications, products, and targeted engagements.

The Limbik Deep Dive Series seeks to provide open-access information on some of the most relevant disinformation themes and narratives that threaten societal stability. This series will highlight the indispensable role of predictive analytics in the fight against disinformation. In every post, a specific disinformation theme or narrative is analyzed using Limbik’s proprietary Information Defense System, a suite of predictive threat evaluation and advanced risk assessments systems.

Some of the most important metrics of Limbik’s Information Defense System are:

  • Potential for Impact (PFI): PFI is a combination of two variables: Believability and Virality – their calculation will be explained in a dedicated blog post. PFI is driven by action AND emotion. PFI predicts whether content related to an MDM theme or narrative will be considered believable, credible, or trustworthy – not just if it's likely to go viral.

  • Foreign Influence (FI): Foreign Influence captures the percentage of theme or narrative-related artifacts originating from foreign sources. This allows for insight into whether content related to a particular theme or narrative may be inauthentically amplified and accelerated by foreign actors.

Limbik predictively evaluates disinformation topics, themes, and narratives. They are distinguished by their respective granularity:

  • Topics are umbrella MDM subjects under which different, more detailed Themes fall. An example of a Topic is U.S. Elections.

  • Themes segment conversations to perform a deeper and more customized analysis of a Topic. A Theme that falls under the U.S. Elections Topic is Voting Machines.

  • Narratives are specifically defined and evaluated for individual Limbik clients and are more granular than Themes. For example, a Narrative analyzed by Limbik for the Voting Machines Theme is ‘China rigged the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election through a cyber attack on voting machines’.
